The first digit indicates the level of protection against access to hazardous parts and the ingress of solid foreign objects:
- IP 0x Not protected
- IP 1x Protected against solid foreign objects of 50mm diameter and greater
- IP 2x Protected against solid foreign objects of 12,5mm diameter and greater
- IP 3x Protected against solid foreign objects of 2,5mm diameter and greater
- IP 4x Protected against solid foreign objects of 1,0mm diameter and greater
- IP 5x Protected from the amount of dust that would interfere with normal operation
- IP 6x Dust tight (dust must not interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment)
The second digit indicates the level of protection against the ingress of water:
- IP x0 Not protected
- IP x1 Protected against vertically falling water drops
- IP x2 Protected against vertically falling water drops when enclosure is tilted up to 15°
- IP x3 Protected against water sprayed at an angle up to 60° on either side of the vertical
- IP x4 Protected against water splashed against the component from any direction
- IP x5 Protected against water projected in jets from any direction
- IP x6 Protected against water projected in powerful jets from any direction
- IP x7 Protected against temporary immersion in water (under defined conditions of pressure and time)
- IP x8 Protected against continuous immersion in water (water must not not interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment)
